The trial period is an initial period of service during which the department or program assesses the performance of a newly hired regular employee to determine if the employee meets the requirements and expectations of the position. This process will assist supervisors and managers in delivering clear expectations and feedback during the crucial early months of an employee’s time in a new job.
When you have a new staff person serving a trial period, you will begin receiving notification from your Service Center representative in our Human Resources office with the new performance review form that should be used and completed by the supervisor at mid-point in the trial period and again at the end of the trial period.
For non-bargaining unit staff, the first notice will be sent approximately 5 ½-6 months into the 12 month trial period, and a second email notice about 5 months after their start date.
For bargaining unit staff, the first notice will be sent approximately 1 ½ months into the 3 month trial period, and a second email notice about 2 1/2 months after their start date.
Your Human Resources Manager will be in touch with you during this process to be of assistance should any particular questions or issues arise. If there is interest in exploring extending the trial period due to extenuating circumstances, early communication with your HRM is essential, as there are limitations in being able to do this. Your HRM will also contact the employee at the mid-point to be available if she/he has any questions.
Completing the Forms
--Supervisor meets with employee and completes Part I (at mid-point in trial period). If there are any performance concerns, please contact your HRM promptly to discuss and send a copy of the review through the mid-point to your HRM. (You do not need to send the mid-point review if there are no performance concerns).
--Supervisor meets with employee and completes Part II (at conclusion of trial period). Return the completed original form to your Service Center representative. A copy is to be filed in the employee’s personnel file and the employee should be given a copy.
